Nexus 4 for the Traveler - Staying Contract-Free

Going contract-free means I can drop my plan down to $5-10 a month while abroad, reserving my phone number for cheap.  It also means having an unlocked phone, which I can use abroad by purchasing local pre-paid SIM cards.

While in the states, I've set up my Nexus 4 to use Consumer Cellular's data connection.  2GB of data (enough for me) is only $30 a month so my bill is considerably cheaper than it ever was with a Verizon contract.

Here's how I set it up:
  1. Buy unlocked Nexus 4 on sale.
  2. Call CC and give them the IMEI number from the phone
  3. Configure a new APN with the following settings:
    • Name: cci
    • APN: att.mvno
    • Proxy:
    • Port: 80
    • username/password/server: not set
    • mmsc:
    • MMS proxy:
    • MMS port: 80
    • MCC: 310
    • MNC: 410
    • Authentication type: PAP
    • APN type: default,supl,mms,agps,fota
    • APN protocol: IPv4
    • APN roaming protocol: IPv4
    • Bearer: unspecified
